El Pit
Cenote Diving · Tulum
The Pit is widely regarded as one of the most visually stunning dives on the planet, and for good reason. Located just off the highway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, this open cenote drops straight down into a seemingly bottomless blue abyss that reaches over 119 meters in depth — though recreational divers typically stay within the 40-meter range. What makes The Pit truly legendary are the sunbeams. Between roughly 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM, shafts of golden light pierce through the circular opening above and shoot deep into the water column, creating an ethereal cathedral of light that has graced the cover of nearly every dive magazine in the world.
As you descend past the shallow halocline at around 15 meters, you will notice the water temperature shift and the visibility open up to well over 100 meters. At approximately 30 meters, a hydrogen sulphide cloud hovers like an underwater fog bank — a surreal layer of milky white gas produced by decomposing organic matter. Dropping through this cloud reveals ancient tree trunks and branches draped in a ghostly white coating, creating an otherworldly landscape that many divers compare to an alien planet.
The Pit is an advanced dive due to its depth, but intermediate divers can enjoy the upper reaches where the light shows are most spectacular. The cenote itself is surrounded by jungle, and the wooden staircase down to the water adds to the sense of descending into another world. For underwater photographers, there is simply no better cenote in the entire Yucatan Peninsula. The combination of depth, light, and the hydrogen sulphide cloud creates compositions that look like they belong in a science fiction film rather than a travel brochure.
