About The Pit

The Pit is widely regarded as one of the most visually stunning dives on the planet, and for good reason. Located just off the highway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, this open cenote drops straight down into a seemingly bottomless blue abyss that reaches over 119 meters in depth — though recreational divers typically stay within the 40-meter range. What makes The Pit truly legendary are the sunbeams. Between roughly 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM, shafts of golden light pierce through the circular opening above and shoot deep into the water column, creating an ethereal cathedral of light that has graced the cover of nearly every dive magazine in the world.

As you descend past the shallow halocline at around 15 meters, you will notice the water temperature shift and the visibility open up to well over 100 meters. At approximately 30 meters, a hydrogen sulphide cloud hovers like an underwater fog bank — a surreal layer of milky white gas produced by decomposing organic matter. Dropping through this cloud reveals ancient tree trunks and branches draped in a ghostly white coating, creating an otherworldly landscape that many divers compare to an alien planet.

The Pit is an advanced dive due to its depth, but intermediate divers can enjoy the upper reaches where the light shows are most spectacular. The cenote itself is surrounded by jungle, and the wooden staircase down to the water adds to the sense of descending into another world. For underwater photographers, there is simply no better cenote in the entire Yucatan Peninsula. The combination of depth, light, and the hydrogen sulphide cloud creates compositions that look like they belong in a science fiction film rather than a travel brochure.

Dive Highlights

  • Famous sunbeam light shows between 11 AM and 1 PM
  • Hydrogen sulphide cloud at 30 meters creates an eerie underwater fog
  • Over 100 meters of visibility in crystal-clear water
  • Ancient submerged tree trunks below the cloud layer
  • One of the deepest cenotes open to recreational divers
  • Considered a top-10 dive site worldwide by multiple dive publications

The Pit — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about diving at The Pit cenote.

Recreational divers typically descend to 30-40 meters at The Pit. The hydrogen sulphide cloud sits at around 30 meters, and the famous sunbeams are visible from the surface down to about 40 meters. The cenote itself extends past 119 meters, but only technical divers with specialized training and equipment go beyond 40 meters.

The best time to see The Pit's legendary sunbeams is between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM when the sun is directly overhead. We time our dives specifically to coincide with this window so you get the full light show experience. The beams are most dramatic on clear, sunny days.

We recommend at least an Advanced Open Water certification and experience with deep dives. The main attractions sit between 30-40 meters, which is beyond the limits of a basic Open Water certification. If you hold only an Open Water cert, we can still bring you to enjoy the upper reaches of the cenote where you will see beautiful light effects, though you will not reach the hydrogen sulphide cloud.

The Pit is not suitable for snorkeling. The cenote is a deep vertical shaft, and all of the spectacular features — the sunbeams at depth, the hydrogen sulphide cloud, the submerged trees — are only visible to scuba divers. For a cenote snorkeling experience, we recommend Dos Ojos, Cenote Eden, or Casa Cenote.
