About Dos Ojos

Dos Ojos — meaning "Two Eyes" in Spanish — is one of the most iconic cenotes in the entire Yucatan Peninsula and consistently ranks among the top cave diving destinations in the world. The name refers to the two circular sinkholes connected by a vast underground cavern system that stretches for over 82 kilometers, making it one of the longest surveyed underwater cave systems on Earth. For recreational cavern divers, Dos Ojos offers two distinct routes: the Barbie Line and the Bat Cave, each delivering a profoundly different experience.

The Barbie Line takes you through a decorated passage filled with massive stalactites and stalagmites that formed over millions of years when these caves were above water during ice ages. The clarity of the water here is otherworldly — visibility regularly exceeds 100 meters, and the sensation of flying weightlessly through these ancient formations is unlike anything else in diving. Sunlight filters in from both cenote openings, illuminating the formations in a soft blue glow that makes every turn feel like entering a new room in an underground palace.

The Bat Cave route is equally spectacular but with a twist — you surface inside a pitch-dark air dome where hundreds of bats roost above your head. The sound of their wings echoing off the cave walls while you float in the darkness is an experience that stays with you long after you leave Mexico. This route also features some of the most impressive column formations in the system.

Dos Ojos is suitable for all certification levels, making it one of the most accessible yet spectacular cenote dives available. The maximum depth in the cavern zone stays around 8-10 meters, so bottom time is generous and the diving is relaxed. Snorkelers are also welcome and can explore the crystal-clear pools above the cavern entrance. Whether you are a seasoned diver or on your very first cenote adventure, Dos Ojos is an experience that defines why people travel from around the world to dive the Yucatan.

Dos Ojos — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about diving at Dos Ojos cenote.

Dos Ojos is one of the best cenotes for beginner divers. The cavern zone has a maximum depth of around 8-10 meters, which means you have plenty of bottom time and the diving is very relaxed. The wide passages and excellent visibility make navigation easy, and natural light is visible throughout most of the cavern routes. It is often the first cenote we recommend for divers who are new to cavern diving.

Yes, Dos Ojos is one of the best cenotes for snorkeling in the Riviera Maya. The crystal-clear water and shallow areas around the cenote openings allow snorkelers to see the stunning formations below. You can also snorkel into the entrance of the Bat Cave for a thrilling experience. We offer dedicated cenote snorkeling tours that include Dos Ojos.

Depending on the route, you will see massive stalactites and stalagmites, ancient column formations, halocline effects where fresh and salt water mix, and the famous Bat Cave air dome. The Barbie Line features the most decorated passages with incredible geological formations, while the Bat Cave route includes surfacing in a dark chamber with a live bat colony. Both routes have extraordinary visibility and light effects.

A typical dive at Dos Ojos lasts 45-60 minutes depending on your air consumption and which route you take. Because of the shallow depth, you get generous bottom time. We usually do two dives here — one on each route — so you get to experience both the Barbie Line and the Bat Cave in a single visit.
