About Angelita

Cenote Angelita is one of the most surreal and otherworldly dive sites on the planet — a place where reality seems to bend and the laws of nature appear to break down. Located about 15 minutes south of Tulum, this deep open cenote contains a phenomenon that draws advanced divers from every corner of the globe: a thick hydrogen sulphide cloud that hovers at approximately 30 meters depth, creating what appears to be an underwater river or lake suspended in midwater. Below this cloud, submerged dead trees stand upright in the darkness, their branches reaching upward through the murky layer like the skeletal remains of a drowned forest.

The dive begins with a descent along a steep, rocky wall covered in tangled roots and fallen branches. The first 25 meters are filled with clear, warm fresh water as you pass through a green-tinted zone where filtered jungle light creates an eerie glow. Then the hydrogen sulphide layer appears — a dense, milky white cloud that stretches across the entire cenote like a false bottom. Dropping through it is one of diving's most disorienting and exhilarating moments. Your visibility drops to near zero for a few meters before you emerge into the dark, cold salt water below, where the dead trees stand in silent rows like a sunken graveyard.

Angelita is strictly an advanced dive. The main features sit at 30-35 meters, and the cenote drops to over 60 meters at its deepest point. Nitrogen narcosis management, deep dive planning, and proper gas management are all essential skills. The sulphide cloud also produces a pungent smell if any enters your mask — an odd but harmless sensation that adds to the alien atmosphere.

For divers with the experience to handle the depth, Angelita is a bucket-list dive that offers something completely unlike any other cenote. The images and video you will capture here look like they were taken on another planet. This is a dive that redefines what you think is possible underwater.

Angelita — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about diving at Angelita cenote.

We require at minimum an Advanced Open Water certification with logged deep dive experience for Angelita. The main attraction — the hydrogen sulphide cloud — sits at 30 meters, and divers typically descend to 33-35 meters to see the submerged forest below it. This is well beyond basic Open Water limits. Deep diving experience and good air management are essential.

The hydrogen sulphide cloud is not dangerous to divers. It is a natural phenomenon caused by decomposing organic material, and you simply pass through it during your descent and ascent. If a small amount enters your mask, you may notice a sulphur-like smell, but this is harmless. The cloud is a few meters thick, and you maintain contact with the guideline throughout your passage through it.

Below the hydrogen sulphide cloud, you enter dark, cold salt water where dead trees stand upright with their branches reaching up into the cloud above. It looks like a flooded graveyard or alien landscape. The contrast between the bright, clear water above the cloud and the dark, eerie world below is one of the most dramatic transitions in all of diving.
