About Siete Bocas

Siete Bocas — Spanish for "Seven Mouths" — takes its name from the seven distinct openings in the jungle floor that lead down into a single, interconnected cavern system. Located in the jungle northwest of Playa del Carmen, this cenote offers a uniquely atmospheric dive experience that feels more like genuine exploration than almost any other cavern dive in the region. The multiple openings mean that light enters the system from several directions simultaneously, creating an ever-changing tapestry of light beams, shadows, and reflections that keeps you looking in every direction throughout the dive.

Descending through one of the entrances, you find yourself in a large, dome-shaped cavern with a silty bottom and well-decorated walls. The ceiling is punctuated by the multiple openings, each casting its own shaft of light into the darkness below. The effect is genuinely magical — as you swim through the cavern, you pass from shadow into light and back again, with each opening revealing a different angle and intensity of illumination. On sunny days, the light columns are crisp and defined, reaching all the way to the bottom and lighting up the formations in brilliant detail.

The formations at Siete Bocas are mature and impressive, with stalactites and stalagmites that have had millions of years to develop. Flowstone cascades along the walls in several areas, and the ceiling features intricate formations that reward close inspection. The cavern passages extend in multiple directions from the main chamber, providing opportunities for exploration that extend well beyond a single dive.

Siete Bocas requires intermediate skills due to the silt-bottom areas that can reduce visibility if disturbed. Good buoyancy control and fin technique are essential to keep the water clear for yourself and any divers behind you. For those with the skills to handle it, Siete Bocas delivers a cenote diving experience that feels wild, authentic, and deeply immersive.

Siete Bocas — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about diving at Siete Bocas cenote.

The cavern at Siete Bocas has areas with a silty bottom that can be easily disturbed, reducing visibility if your fin technique lifts sediment. Good buoyancy control and proper frog-kick technique are essential to maintain clear water. We recommend having some cenote diving experience before attempting Siete Bocas, as managing your position in the water column is crucial for an enjoyable dive.

The seven separate openings in the jungle floor above create a light show that no other cenote can replicate. Rather than one beam or two, you get seven distinct light sources illuminating the cavern from different angles. Swimming through the cavern means constantly transitioning between shadow and light, with new perspectives revealing themselves with every meter. It is a truly dynamic and immersive visual experience.

Siete Bocas is approximately 20 minutes from Playa del Carmen, making it one of the closest cenotes to the city. It is located in the jungle to the northwest and is reached via a short drive on local roads. We provide free hotel pickup, so you do not need to worry about navigating to the site yourself.
