About Kin-Ha

Cenote Kin-Ha, whose name translates to "House of the Sun" in the Mayan language, is a spectacularly beautiful open cenote that lives up to its name in every way. Located near Tulum, this cenote features a large, circular pool surrounded by sheer limestone cliffs draped in tropical vegetation, with the sun casting brilliant beams of light deep into the crystal-clear water below. The overall effect is reminiscent of a natural amphitheater where the sun is the performer and the water is the stage.

For divers, Kin-Ha offers a unique vertical profile. The cenote drops steeply from the edges, with walls covered in roots and geological formations that create interesting dive routes at various depths. The water clarity is excellent, often exceeding 40 meters of visibility, and the open top means that natural light penetrates deep into the water column. During the middle of the day, light beams dance across the walls and bottom, creating photography opportunities that rival even The Pit for sheer visual drama.

The cavern zone at Kin-Ha extends from the main pool into decorated passages that feature classic Yucatan speleothems. The transition from the sunlit open water into the darker cavern is gradual and atmospheric, with the formations becoming more impressive as the natural light fades and your torch takes over. The maximum depth in the accessible zones is around 18 meters, placing it in the intermediate category.

Kin-Ha's surface is equally rewarding. The cliff-lined pool is surrounded by jungle and feels completely removed from civilization. Swimming in the crystal-clear water between dives, watching the sunlight play across the limestone walls, and listening to the sounds of the jungle above is an experience that captures the very essence of why people travel to the Yucatan. Kin-Ha is a cenote that nourishes both the diver and the soul.

Kin-Ha — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about diving at Kin-Ha cenote.

Kin-Ha comes from the Mayan language where 'Kin' means 'sun' and 'Ha' means 'water' or 'house.' The name translates roughly to 'House of the Sun,' which perfectly describes this open cenote where sunlight fills the circular pool with brilliant light throughout the day. The Mayan people considered cenotes sacred, and names like Kin-Ha reflect the spiritual connection they felt with these natural formations.

Kin-Ha is excellent for underwater photography. The open top allows strong natural light to penetrate deep into the water, creating dramatic light beams similar to those at The Pit but in a more accessible setting. The limestone walls, vegetation, and clear water provide beautiful backdrops for both wide-angle and portrait-style shots. Midday visits offer the best light beam conditions.

Absolutely. We regularly pair Kin-Ha with other cenotes near Tulum for a two-cenote dive day. Popular combinations include Kin-Ha with Cenote Eden, Casa Cenote, or Carwash (Aktun Ha). Each pairing gives you two different types of cenote experience — for example, the open-air beauty of Kin-Ha combined with the cavern formations of another cenote.
