Carwash
Cenote Diving · Tulum
Aktun Ha, universally known as Carwash among the dive community, earned its nickname decades ago when local taxi drivers used to wash their cars in its wide, open pool. Today, this cenote west of Tulum is recognized as one of the most visually diverse dive sites in the region, offering a unique combination of open water beauty and spectacular cavern diving that few other cenotes can match.
The dive begins in a large, open pool surrounded by jungle vegetation, lily pads, and submerged aquatic plants that create an almost Amazonian atmosphere. During the rainy season (roughly May through November), the surface is covered in a stunning carpet of green algae and plants that filter the sunlight into an emerald glow below — creating conditions that underwater photographers describe as magical. Schools of tiny fish weave through the aquatic garden, and small freshwater turtles sometimes make appearances in the shallows.
As you move beyond the open pool, the cavern system opens up with impressive passages decorated in classic Yucatan style: stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and flowstone in every direction. The cavern at Carwash is particularly spacious, with high ceilings and wide passages that feel comfortable even for newer cavern divers. At around 15 meters depth, the halocline creates its signature shimmer, and the transition from the green-tinged open water to the crystal-clear cavern water is a visual experience unlike anything else.
Carwash is an excellent choice for divers who want variety in a single dive — the combination of the lush open-water garden and the classic cavern formations means you essentially get two completely different diving experiences in one site. It is also one of the best cenotes for macro photography, with small crustaceans and aquatic insects adding to the biodiversity of the open pool section. Whether you are drawn by the unique surface ecosystem or the decorated underground passages, Carwash delivers a cenote experience that stands apart from the crowd.
