About Barbie Line

The Barbie Line is a specific cavern dive route within the larger Dos Ojos cenote system, and it has earned its own dedicated following among divers who consider it one of the finest cavern dives in the world. The route takes its name from the permanent guideline installed by cave explorer Robbie Schmittner, whose nickname in the diving community led to the line being playfully called the "Barbie Line." What awaits along this route is anything but playful — it is a world-class cavern experience that showcases the very best of what the Dos Ojos system has to offer.

The Barbie Line takes you through a long, magnificently decorated passage that connects the two "eyes" (cenote openings) of the Dos Ojos system. The route passes through galleries of massive stalactites and stalagmites, with formations so large and perfectly formed that they look like the pillars of an underground temple. The water clarity along the Barbie Line is among the best in the cenote world — visibility regularly exceeds 100 meters, creating a surreal sense of flying through an infinite underground space.

One of the route's most impressive features is the sheer variety of formations along its length. You pass through sections dominated by white, pristine stalactites, then transition into areas with amber-toned columns, then enter chambers where soda straws hang in clusters from the ceiling. The halocline at approximately 8 meters adds its characteristic shimmer, and the interplay of natural light filtering in from both cenote openings creates a soft, diffused illumination that varies throughout the dive.

The Barbie Line is accessible to all certified divers due to its shallow maximum depth of approximately 8-10 meters and wide passages. It is one of the dive routes we most frequently recommend for divers experiencing cenote diving for the first time, as it delivers a truly spectacular experience in a comfortable and well-managed environment. The combination of world-class formations, crystal-clear water, and accessible depth makes the Barbie Line one of the defining dives of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Barbie Line — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about diving at Barbie Line cenote.

The Barbie Line is a specific dive route within the larger Dos Ojos cenote system. When you dive Dos Ojos, you can choose between different routes — the Barbie Line and the Bat Cave being the two most popular. Many divers do both routes on the same day, one per tank. The Barbie Line focuses on formation-decorated passages, while the Bat Cave features the famous underground air dome with live bats.

The name comes from cave explorer Robbie Schmittner, whose nickname in the Mexican cave diving community was 'Barbie.' He installed the permanent guideline along this particular cavern route, and the line — and by extension the dive route — became known as the Barbie Line. Despite the playful name, this is one of the most serious and spectacular cavern dive routes in the cenote world.

The Barbie Line is excellent for beginners. The maximum depth is only 8-10 meters, the passages are wide and comfortable, and natural light is visible from both cenote openings throughout much of the route. The formations are spectacular without requiring any technical navigation skills, making it one of the best introductions to cenote diving available anywhere. We frequently choose this as the first cenote dive for new cavern divers.
